How to Prepare Your Septic Tank for Winter

Winter can be tough on septic systems, especially if they are not properly prepared. Here are six tips to help you get your septic system ready for the colder months.

Schedule a Septic Tank Pumping

This is perhaps the most important step in preparing your septic system for winter. A septic tank that is too full can cause all sorts of problems, including backups and overflows. To prevent these issues, it's a good idea to have your septic tank pumped by a professional septic company before winter arrives. A septic tank is generally pumped every three to five years, so be sure to keep track of your pumping schedule. Ensure that you have your tank pumped before the temperatures drop. Freezing temperatures make the tank harder to access because the ground can freeze.

Insulate the Drain Field

During the winter, the septic tank can be damaged by frozen ground, so you must take every precaution to safeguard it. Fortunately, protecting the drainage field is simple. By allowing grass to grow around your septic system, you can accomplish this. During the winter, the grass acts as an insulating layer over the area being treated for soil. Spread the leaves or straw over the drain field if you don't have a lawn. The same thing applies to pipes. If you have any pipes that are exposed to the cold, it's a good idea to insulate them. This can help prevent the pipes from freezing, which can lead to costly repairs.

Fix Any Leaks or Damage

To prevent freezing and cracking, drain all of the septic tank's pipes if you won't be home during the winter. After you have turned off the water main, open all of the faucets and leave them open so that the water can drain completely. Additionally, disconnect all appliances' hoses, including the washing machine and dishwasher.  If your septic system has any leaks or other types of damage, it's important to get them repaired by Septic Blue before winter sets in. This will help prevent further damage from occurring due to freezing temperatures.

Avoid Flushing Non-Biodegradable Items

Your septic system is designed to break down organic materials, but it can't handle non-biodegradable items like wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels. To prevent clogs and other issues, it's important to avoid flushing these types of items down the toilet.

Use Septic-safe Cleaners

If you use harsh cleaners or chemicals in your home, they can harm your septic system. To protect your septic system, be sure to use septic-safe cleaners whenever possible.

Have Your Septic System Inspected

Finally, it's a good idea to have your septic system inspected by a professional septic company before winter arrives. This will help ensure that your system is in good working order and ready to handle the colder temperatures.

By following these six tips, you can help ensure that your septic system stays in good shape throughout the winter months. And if you're not sure how to take care of your septic system or need help with septic tank pumping, Septic Blue can provide the guidance and assistance you need.
